Enjoy this rare opportunity to see the whales off the San Diego coast aboard "America," a 139-foot luxurious, historic yacht that is the namesake for the America's Cup, during the peak of the whale migration. Tour also includes admission to the San Diego Maritime Museum before and after your whale watching sail. This is no ordinary whale watching experience!
From Mid-December through early April, California gray whales travel past San Diego in their 10,000 mile annual migration from the Bering Sea to Baja California. As they travel south, they are in larger concentrations and seemingly closer to shore. This allows multiple sightings each time we sail. They travel at about 8 knots past our viewing area. Of course, they do stop to play occasionally, breaching from the water to send massive sprays of ocean in all directions. Most of the sightings occur within 5 miles of the coastline.
While the whales are the tour's primary purpose, a massive number of dolphins swim along with the yacht. There can be thousands of them in any school. Three or four different species are often seen.
The San Diego Maritime Museum is home to a magnificent showpiece of famous ships and maritime history. You can stroll the decks of "Star of India," crawl through an ancient Russian Submarine or tour "Surprise," the ship featured in the Russell Crowe film, "Master & Commander."

Sailing to see whales and dolphins presents a fabulous day out and can often be described as having a "Picnic on the Ocean." So, there will be a big cooler with soda, water & ice aboard, and also some light snacks. You may bring your own alcoholic beverages, sandwiches for lunch, etc. You can see how the "picnic" thing comes about, with this magnificent yacht cruising the Pacific coastline on a beautiful sunny day, a blanket on deck, the picnic basket with the crackers and cheese, plus a nice bottle of your favorite wine. And, somewhere along the way, the whales and dolphins become a bonus.
The yacht "America" is very stable and very few guests ever experience any motion sickness. A trip to the ocean on board "America" is as much about the opportunity to sail on this amazing yacht as it is to see the whales.
Guests are advised to wear soft-sole shoes, such as sneakers, deck shoes or sandals. Guests should bring binoculars, hats, sunscreen and cameras. Guests do not get wet. There is ample storage space available for jackets.
